About a Better Blue –
Our Eco-Friendly Denim Line

What the jeans of the future will look like? In any case blue – but also green. A BETTER BLUE is our eco-friendly denim line. We have developed it with our long-established partners in Italy and are pushing it forward together – because environmentally friendly production is a matter which is very close to our heart.

In addition to the Candiani weaving mill near Milan, our cooperation partners include the Everest laundry near Venice. Candiani uses forty per cent cotton from sustainably managed plantations for all A BETTER BLUE denims. And for the washes, Everest relies on innovative processes, some of which do not require any water (and that in a laundry!), no chemicals and little electricity.

Washing

Everest uses various eco-friendly treatments and achieves used-denim looks with laser or ozone gas to minimise water consumption and the use of chemicals.

Handmade in Italy

Many used-look details of the denims are created entirely by hand, for example with sanders or sandpaper.

Stonewash alternatives

Everest uses environmentally friendly alternatives to the classic stonewash process. The company works with artificial stones or achieves the typical effects by inserting an abrasive drum into the washing machine.

Water treatment

The company's 1,000 square metre wastewater treatment plant treats 1,200 cubic metres of water every day, for which Everest uses a sophisticated bacterial system instead of chemicals.

The Everest laundry –
a look behind the scenes

A pronounced passion for denim is only one of the characteristics we share with Everest. The company from Piombino Dese, a small town near Venice, has been our partner since 2007. With many years of expertise, it takes care of the special washes of our Closed denim. Everest, like us, attaches great importance to environmentally friendly processes and develops new standards – for jeans that are as sustainable as possible.
The company, which was founded in 1976 and has 80 employees, uses denim-washing processes for A BETTER BLUE that require less to no water and do not use chemicals. Some techniques are completely handmade.

Everest has been working with the Italian weaving mill Candiani for over ten years which is our long-established denim producer and A BETTER BLUE cooperation partner. Together, we develop the jeans of the future.

Gabriele

has been with Everest for eight years – as a laser expert. Thanks to his know-how, Everest also uses environmentally friendly laser processes to give denim a used look. Gabriele likes to experiment with different techniques for new effects. He collects the results in his personal archive: a large wall at his workplace.

Laser

Laser has the power to produce very different shades of blue. With lasers you can achieve patchy as well as flat effects in a vintage look. Conventional washing processes are accelerated or even completely replaced by the use of lasers – which reduces the use of water and chemicals.

Zudi

uses sandpaper and sanders to create authentic used-look details for the jeans – completely by hand. He has been part of the Everest team for three years and has been working in this field for over twenty years – just like his father. A small family tradition that Zudi continues with great dedication.

Low Impact Oxidants

The so-called Fog-Wash method saves up to 80 percent water, compared to conventional washing processes. Degradable bioenzymes or low impact oxidants lighten the denim. They are an eco-friendly alternative to conventional bleaching agents, which usually contain chlorine or potassium permanganate and require high washing temperatures.

Bladi

has worked in laundries for 35 years and has been with Everest for six. His speciality is ozone washing, where jeans are treated with ozone gas. Bladi is proud of the fact that this technique requires no chemicals and consumes very little water. He enjoys constantly learning new things in his field. Depending on the outside temperature and humidity, he adjusts the settings of his machine for optimum results.

Ozone washing

To achieve a faded look, Everest washes denim with ozone gas, a strong oxidising agent. It leaves no residue and water consumption is minimal. Washing takes only a few minutes, so little electricity is needed. No chemicals are used.

Jessica

loves her work on the different sewing machines. In her sixteen years with Everest, she has become an expert in the artful patching of denim with a destroyed look. In addition, there is always plenty of variety – she is involved in several sewing tasks, always using the most suitable machine.

Artificial Stone Wash

With conventional stonewash procedures jeans are washed with pumice stones. These wear out quickly and must be disposed of after two washes. In addition, a lot of water is needed to remove the residues. Everest uses an innovative alternative: artificial stones. They can withstand up to eight wash cycles and minimise water consumption due to their reduced wear.
