“I love working,
but I also love not working.”

He strides out of the post-production studios where the finishing touches are being put to the third season of Babylon Berlin, (watch it on Sky now). Holding in his hand an apple, Volker Bruch sits down for our interview. You might expect him to be stressed out, but he is bubbling with energy; in fact, the next thing on his itinerary after this interview is an Extinction Rebellion march. Although the 39-year-old is one of Germany’s most sought-after actors, there’s no trace of diva attitude at all. The German-Austrian actor may be a presence on the screen, but in real life he shows down-to-earth restraint, honest common sense and a propensity for self-irony.

A chat about saying no with Volker Bruch

A chat about saying no with Volker Bruch

Actors drift between the spotlight, accolades and the red carpet…would you agree?
The way we are seen from the outside often has very little to do with reality. It’s always a question of how you tick, what you want and what you say ‘yes’ to. In my experience, it is often far more effective to say ‘no’ rather than too many ‘yeses’.

But there’s no progress without ‘yes’. Have you ever unconditionally said ‘yes’ to a part without seeing the script first?
For Jerks! After the first couple of seasons I told my agent: if you ever get an enquiry, then sign me up! It followed, and I simply knew that I had to do it. Then I read the script and thought: oh no! (laughs)

That’s no surprise, because in the series you not only lock your au pair in the basement, but are also accused of raping her…
It was never a question of whether I would do it. More: oh gosh – now I have to do it. At the same time, it’s great to play a part like this. It’s more a prank.

As an acclaimed and instantly recognisable actor, how do you manage to achieve a balance between your career and your private life?
In the two-year break for Babylon Berlin, I did practically no work because while I love working, I also love not working. That’s the ideal balance for me. And there are so many other things in life to experience!

Like your new home: you and your family have just moved to the Brandenburg countryside outside Berlin. Now you live surrounded by hens and apple trees. What made you want this absolute contrast to Berlin’s city life?
It is something I have long dreamed of, and I finally decided to compare the fantasy with reality. I always knew that I wanted to do this, but I didn’t know whether I was just indulging in a dream. The only way to find out was to test it, otherwise you end up desperately unhappy. It was something I needed to do – and I love it!

But it takes courage...
There’s nothing better for getting to know yourself than breaking habits. Only once you’ve taken that step can new things happen, and that’s very invigorating. Rural deceleration is very exciting for me, because there are no limits. Calmness can be golden, but some things demand quick action. Take climate change, for example. This is something that is urgent and it makes me nervous.

We may be running out of time, but it’s also something that calls for slowness and deceleration…
Definitely! We need to understand that unfettered growth is simply not good.
